is 2018 going to be the year of the woman?

Oprah for president in 2020! That was one of many people’s wish on Twitter last week. The reason was the inspiring speech given by Oprah Winfrey during the presentation of the Golden Globes. She asked for tolerance and equality.

Of course, that call is not new. What is new is that it is time for women to show and hear themselves. That they tell their stories. They have to give their words more power. Time for action! It was expected to hear about #timesup as the successor of #metoo in the Dutch television program ‘De Wereld Draait Door’ on January 8, 2018.

When I saw Oprah’s speech, I was impressed by her strength. I thought about “Hidden Figures”; a film about the inequality of African-American women who provide important mathematical data to NASA to launch the first succeeding space mission. This film can be seen at the cinema from 9 March 2018. Personally, I do not feel any inequality in race, gender, class, ‘limitation’, belief or culture, but this true story takes place in the early 1960s. That is not a long time ago!

Let yourself shine through - Janelle Monae

Yesterday I spoke to Hanny Schoonderwoerd of ‘Mijn verhaal in klare taal’ (My story told in understandable language). She told me it is striking how women continue to make themselves very very small. She is angry and sad, because she sees a lot of potential within the women that come to her. What is it, don’t they see that themselves? It has everything to do with taking yourself seriously. We should take ourselves, our dreams, wishes and talents seriously. Your talent is as important to ensure that life is truly equal for all women around the world!

Almost a year ago we decided to portrait women. Every photoshoot is so special, because all these women show a little piece of their story. Something they struggle with, an illness, separation or loss. But they all showed their true power in front of the camera and they allow us to share it with them. That means a lot to us!

The 8 March 2018 it is International Women’s Day. The aim is to draw attention to themes such as economic independence, empowerment, sexual violence, care and work, discrimination and racism. The theme of 2018: women and men are equal everywhere. Coincidentally, Francis and I also celebrate this special date, because it is 27 years ago that we met and Francis Frionnet Portraits exists 1 year. And that’s worth a party! Celebrate being a woman, celebrate with us! We are happy to meet you in our studio.

  • And then it was time to go on the set. Would I really do it? I could still go back. No!!! I had come this far… Nobody knew about this photoshoot, except this good friend and I certainly did not want to disappoint him. ...

  • On the the few pictures that have been taken of me, I always smile. Now I wanted some different images. Julia Roberts, Audrey Hepburn, Jennifer Lopez, Michelle Pfeiffer ... all women who show their power without a huge smile on their faces....
